Textiles, Quilts + Beaded Object Treatments

MPFC has capability of working with many types of fabric reparation and cleaning: quilts, woven items, tapestries, needlepoint, and beaded objects. We also repair passementerie (trim), as is shown in the last item below, and also within the Hearst Castle® Flemish Sofa information.

Ken Ellis' Eliza Danto

Eliza Danto is a 30"x34" painted, quilted, beaded and embroidered artwork by Chicago artist Ken Ellis. Our job was to clean the piece off a lifetime of accumulated dirt, and secure beads which were lost, and replace beads still in the owner's possession. We were unable to find exact matches for some missing items, but will continue to keep them in mind during our searches. For images after treatment, click here.

 

Ken Ellis' Shore Family

The Shore Family is a 50"x32" painted, quilted and embroidered artwork by Chicago artist Ken Ellis. Our job was to clean the piece off a lifetime of accumulated dirt, including grease and stains from tobacco and wood smoke, exacerbated by steam from the nearby kitchen. We did not remove the piece from its frame, and were unable to remove the stain completely. For images after treatment, click here.

 

Victorian Beaded Angel Late 19th Century

This family heirloom was to be a Christmas surprise for a son from his father's family, to be framed. Oxidation and possibly a chemical reaction had eaten areas of a metallic beads, and the same chemical reaction, which we believed to be a mixture of the bead with some liquid, possibly a cleanser, had also eaten through the grid of the needlepoint. Also, moth holes existing in a few areas of the piece. MPFC performed dry cleaning and reparation. We offer the full VICTORIAN BEADED ANGEL TREATMENT REPORT. NPS Crater Lake Centennial Quilt Ca. 2002

The Crater lake Centennial Quilt consisting of nineteen squares created in collaboration by various people associated with Crater Lake National Park needed to be
cleaned and several tears repaired after touring for several years. The challenge was in working with non-traditional modern materials, some of which were glued onto the surface. Both dry- and wet-cleaning techniques were used.

Oregon State Capital Building

Judith Poxson Fawkes Eight Woven Panels Ca. 1977

The artwork (shown above) has hung in Oregon State Capitol Building,
Salem, Oregon since 1977. The eight colorful woven panels were in need of cleaning and reparation. Before, left, and after treatment, right.

Fuhrmeister Tapestry Ca. 1977

The woven tapestry by Heidi Fuhrmeister has hung in Oregon State Capitol Building, Salem, Oregon since 1977. The large weaving was in need of cleaning and reparation of several moth holes. Meticulous matching of fibers in a graduated pigmented weaving was challenging. For more information on Heidi Fuhrmeister, go to the University of Oregon Libraries. Lyman Desert Grasses Quilt Ca. 1977

The Lyman “Desert Grasses” project, has hung in Oregon. State Capitol Building, Salem, Oregon since 1977. Lyman is a quilt consisting of eight rows of varying sized fabric pieces in shades of golds, rusts, and browns, hemmed and backed. Moth hole damage needed reweaving, as well as a thorough cleaning, including several stains of an unknown nature. Before, left, and after treatment, right.

Reparation to a California family heirloom quilt included stain removal and mending of embroidery and tears in the quilt.
